Sprite sheets and loosing content

Posted by IrisOfTheRepliforce - November 1st, 2021

Hey ^.^

So, some good news and bad news for myself.

The good news being I finally found some time in between school and work and friends and other normal IRL stuff to get back into spiriting. It was going pretty well actually. But, that leads us to the bad news here ^.^;

So, this happens sometimes, but one of the programs I use to sprite went haywire. It ended up refreshing and getting rid of 70 percent of a HUGE sprite sheet I was working on recently. This is actually not the first time this has happened, and it REALLY ate away at my motivation the first time it happened. Tech, eh? ^.^; LMFAO

Not only that but my computer itself kinda had a melt down which ultimately lead to the entire sprite sheet just disappearing.

Luckily, however, since I'm so used to nonsense like this happening, I made sure to download frequently and take TONS of screenshots of my work and process, so not all is ultimately lost. I REALLY would have loved to finish what I was working on however, but such is life ^.^; when I regain my motivation again, maybe I will revisit the concept I was working on.

SO Heres what I wanna ask you guys;

  1. Would you like to see some of the sprites I had made before my computer got rid of them? It certainly would not be a proper sprite sheet format, but I would try and muster up everything I could to look neat enough to be presentable (the sprites are of a video game character I really love)
  2. When this sort of thing happens again, would you be okay with seeing messy/unorganized sprites? I have never uploaded the remainders of work that was unfinished, and Im not very used to it, but I would like to hear what you all think.

I for one wouldn’t mind seeing whatever you’ve got left. Something’s better than nothing after all, right? I mean you’ve definitely got it better than I do. I lost some of my sprites from way back in 2017 due to my old hard drive dying on me. It got me unmotivated to do any sprite work for close to a year after that. To this day I still wished I had uploaded the sprites somewhere online so that I’d have an archive, but such is life I guess. Anywho, if you’re willing to step outta your comfort zone a bit and are not already using these two programs, I highly suggest getting Paint.NET and Aseprite. Paint.NET is great for spriting and is free while Aseprite has the extra functionality of being an animation tool and is 5 bucks on Steam. But if you’re not wanting to spend any money then you’d be fine with just Paint.NET alone. I personally use Paint.NET for making sprites while I only really use Aseprite to test animation frames and make gifs of finished sprite animations. Anyways, I hope those programs work out for you if you haven’t already tried them.

Thats really awful you lost a ton of content. Thank you for the advice.

i dont mind messy sprite sheets, every frames a painting right? :D

I'd like to see them ye.

I lost a sprite sheet back in 2001, but my harddrive was only 6GB back then.
My computer also couldnt handle the width I put everything at.
Lesson learned.

:o oh wow, I was just a baby in 2001 HAHA, its impressive if you've been doing sprite work for that long. Sorry you ended up loosing it, sounds like a real pain

@IrisOfTheRepliforce No probs! Also yeah, it really did suck. Most of my best work at the time was on that hard drive, including a fully animated set of sprites. It’s a good thing I had more than one hard drive in my PC otherwise I would’ve lost WAY more.
