Hi hi ^.^
Thanks for all the feed back and response from my last news update post. Honestly, it really sucks to hear some of you went through a similar situation, but its always nice to not be alone, right?
I've been doing some thinking, and when I can, I'll try and collect all the decent looking screenshots/downloads I had of the lost sprite sheet I was working on.
This whole thing got me thinking though; Character I was making a custom sprite sheet of is a platformer mascot I really like. In fact, 2D (And 3D) platformers have always been my favorite genre of games, and probably always will be LMAOOO I'm simple (Although Shooters and RPGs are a very close second fav.)
So, with that being said, for any who are interested, here is my list of top 10 favorite 2D platformers ^_^ My choices shift and change a lot, and have throughout the years, but here is what they are as of now.
(Im only putting one per series on here, and will be counting Mega Man and Mega Man X as the same series for this list, just so that I do not have 2 Mega Man games on here)
10: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)
1997 was a FANTASTIC year for platformers, this isnt the first game from that year you're gonna see on this list (LMAO you probably can guess one already) I really love SOTN and its honestly my fav game in the Castlevania series. I like Alucard a ton (one of my first fictional crushes LMAO), the sprites, music and gameplay are fantastic.
9: Metroid Fusion (2002)
Really great GBA game, again, with fantastic sprite work. I really loved the story in this game with the parasite Samus, and the fact they added in a decent map this time around was really great. I really wanted to put Super Metroid on here since it is a lot more iconic, but honest to god, I much prefer Fusion.
8: Kirby Squeak Squad (2006)
Again, another REALLY good handheld platforming game. Easily my favorite game in the entire Kirby series, actually. Great music, and good powerups all around that are some of the best in the series compared to other titles. Also Daroach is such a great villain.
7: Cuphead (2017)
So glad Cuphead was released when it was, since the late part of the 2010s desperately needed more decent platformers. Cuphead is hard as hell, but not too challenging that you cannot beat it. It took me a while to complete all stages TBH ^.^; The character designs, the way the game looks and the music deserve all the praise it has been getting. I absolutely adore Cuphead and Mugman, they are ADORABLE
6: Super Mario World (1990)
Honest to god, it was insanely hard picking just ONE 2D Mario game for this list. God, there's so many good ones, and come on, Mario isn't exactly a series known for having many bad games. The way he controls is just right, while being mildly floaty, and its got some fantastic speedrun material (I cannot speedrun this game however LMAO)
5: Mad Rat Dead (2020)
Easily game of the year 2020 for me LOOOOL. I could go on and on about this game. You guys probably remember when I posted a lot about it ^.^; I love everything from the story, art, music, I love they combined a platformer concept with a rhythm game mechanic, it all works too well. I could go on and on about this game, but if I did, there would be an entire essay here ^.^; The character designs are FANTASTIC (Rat God for life ^o^)
4: Freedom Planet (2014)
Another really great indie game. Its like Classic Sonic but insanely more complex when it comes to how the characters move and interact with the stages. I know sprite work and visuals has been a huge thing from this list, and I'm sorry I am so biased ^.^; I LOVE the way the game looks. It also has REALLY cute voice acting and the entire game has voiced dialogue, which isn't something you see a lot in platformers. Milla is easily my favorite character in the game, and is atually one of my all time fav video game characters (Fun fact, I was making a sprite sheet of her a long time ago too, but similar to the one I lost recently, my computer had a melt down and got rid of it ^.^;)
3: Sonic 2 (1992)
Similar to Mario, it was REALLY hard to pick just ONE Sonic title for this list. I love the advance series a ton, and I often end up going back and forth between which I like better, Sonic 2 or 3, but at the end of it all, and for now, my current mood tells me I like Sonic 2 best. I've been playing it since I was just a little girl, and still have my physical copy of it for my Genesis. Sonic 2 is also one of those games I can speedrun. I put this title over 3 (and knuckles) simply due to the fact 3 has more zones I find insanely frustrating (I'm looking at you, Marble Garden Zone.)
2: Rayman Legends (2013)
This game is amazing. There isnt any other way I can describe it. Both 2D and 3D Rayman are great, similar to Mario, MOST games in the Rayman series are insanely good. Rayman Legends is one of those games I can sit and play for hours, and can even speedrun. The game LOOKS AMAZING, there are so many costumes you can choose from, the platforming is tight but very wide open, leaving the game feeling very atmospheric. There's so much to do in this game as well, so many different modes, multiplayer, etc. Not to mention the soundtrack is just super good, the music stages, similar to Mad Rat Dead, combine 2D platforming with rhythm based elements, and even do their own versions of iconic songs (They have their own version of Black Betty that sounds fucking kick ass) Again, I don't want to go into too too much detail here, cause I could go on and on about how much I love this game, and series in general.
1: Mega Man X4 (1997)
SURPRISED??? NO??
LMAO
Of course the person called "Iris Of The Repliforce" is going to have X4 as her favorite 2D platformer. I've loved this game as long as I can remember. It was the first game in the X series that let you FULLY play as Zero (X3 only did it half way) it has cheesy anime cutscenes with silly dialogue that are extremely entertaining, and the gameplay is killer, literally the best in the X series if you ask me. A ton of Mega Man fans hold X4 in high regards, and rightfully so. As a little girl, I always loved the idea of Zero having a love interest, and Zero and Iris were like robot Romeo and Juliet to me ^.^; as lame as that sounds. I still love them as a couple a lot, their so adorable. I may not be as interested in Mega Man these days, as there are so many other games and interests I have spent more time on throughout the years, but Mega Man X as a series will always have a special place in my heart. Of course, this is another game I can speedrun, and I actually remember my best time for X4, being 1 hour and 14 minutes. I'll stop rambling about X4 now before I write an essay LMAO
So, there we go. Those are my top picks as of right now for my fav 2D platformers ^.^ what did ya think? See any games on here you really love, do we share some favorites? Lets talk, what's your top 10 or 5? (or you can just tell me some you like if you don't wanna write a list HAHA I get it)
